The Mill
As a tradesman certain privilege is felt when working on such an historic local landmark building such as this beautiful Grade two listed Watermill, you have the unique opportunity to preserve a piece of history while also bringing new life to the property.
During its lifetime the Mill offered work directly and indirectly to thousands of local people over a period of hundreds of years, having a family history local to the area dating back to the 17C its quite likely some of my ancestors benefitted from the economy of the Mill
An interesting Documentary about this Water Mills renovation can be viewed on YouTube, its called “The Mills Life”

Research.
Before any work commenced I researched the history of the Water Mill being sure its original paint colours and finishes. This can often be found through local historical societies or through research at the library or online. It’s important to try and preserve the character and authenticity of the mill as much as possible, so replicating the original paint colours and finishes is often not the best option.
Preserving character and authenticity
Once all the necessary information is gathered about the original paint scheme and before any painting commenced all surfaces were though roughly prepared This involved a thorough cleaning and sanding of the exterior surfaces to ensure that the new paint has a smooth and even surface to adhere to. Any cracks or holes should also be repaired at this time.

Before and After
I also considered the type of paint and finishes to be used. For an historic Water Mill, I chose high-quality, long-lasting trade paints and finishes that will hold up to the elements and maintain their colour and condition over time.
Conclusion.
Repainting an historic water mill can be a daunting task, but with proper research and planning, it can also be a rewarding experience. By preserving the past while also bringing new life to your property, the beautiful and unique Water Mill can be enjoyed for many years to come.”
