The Modern Painter & Decorator ( Circa 1950 )

This is from a lovely old 3 volume book set given to me many years ago by an old decorator and recently discovered hidden away in the loft, here are a few classic decorating terms found in the book –

Sleepy…. A description applied to a film of paint or varnish which is affected by premature loss of gloss.

Smudge…. The remains of old paint, removed from paint kettles after a job is finished.
Painters Holidays….Parts of a finished surface missed and left uncoated by a careless painter.

Alive…. Term applied to a film of paint which has not yet taken on an initial set and can still be worked with the brush.
