Period Cottage Exterior Painting
This Period Cottage was first painted by myself back in 2007 and back then the Cottage had recently been renovated and re- rendered, on first inspection the condition of the painted render looked sound and in reasonable condition but with a small amount of cleaning down it was clear that the previous paint application had failed and had to be removed.
Pressure Washing
A pressure washer is the ideal tool for the removal of algae growth and dirt from you exterior render and if powerful enough is able to remove any loose or flaking paint. With the cottage above the masonry paint although applied over new render had failed badly due to poor application and preparation likely due to the paint being applied too thick and on a dusty surface.
Preparation
Once thoroughly cleaned down any walls in this condition require a coat of a stabilising penetrative sealer and any cracks need to be raked out and filled using a quality exterior filler, for this purpose I used Toupret Touprelith F Exterior Masonry Repair Filler which dries with a texture and finish to match the render and doesn’t require to be sealed before painting. Prior to rolling the walls, its a good idea to mask over any window using a decorators masking film ensuring to use low tack masking tapes.
Painting
I had previously painted this cottage six years ago and at that time it was finished using Dulux Weathershield, which had lasted well apart from a few cracks and colour fade. To combat the issue of colour fastness Dulux has now removed all vibrant exterior masonry paint colours. Before painting the walls the Fascia and Eves were finished with two coats of Dulux Exterior Wood Stain, and this time round Sandtex Sunset Boulevard Smooth Masonry paint was used. Two coats were applied by roller to achieve a solid sound finish.
